This project explores the experience of womanhood through photography and sound installations. Drawing an inspiration from Simone de Beauvoir’s seminal statement, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” I engaged in conversations with various individuals who identify as women, inviting them to reflect on what it means to be a woman.
Through these dialogues, I sought to understand how wom- en define and experience their identity—what shapes their sense of self, and what makes them feel like women. By asking this deeply personal yet complex question, the project examines the fluidity and construction of gender identity, encouraging reflection on themes of gender, identity, and the self.
The work specifically focuses on French-speaking women, capturing their voices and perspectives through a combination of photographs of “a body” and sound recordings. The resulting installation creates an intimate space where personal narratives unfold, offering a multiplicity of experiences rather than a singular definition of womanhood.
